How to Make Matcha Beer

 Ingredients (1 Serving)

Item Amount
Matcha Powder 1g (0.03oz)
Hot Water 30ml (1.01oz) around 80°C (176°F)
Beer 200ml (6.76oz) (Chilled Pale Lager or Pilsner recommended)
Sweetener (Optional) To taste (e.g., Simple Syrup, Agave, or Honey)

※Preparation
For the best visual and flavor experience, ensure your beer and glass are very well-chilled before starting.

STEP 1: Create the Matcha Base

Sift the matcha powder through a fine-mesh strainer into a small bowl or cup to eliminate lumps. Add the hot water (not boiling) and any optional sweetener, then whisk vigorously (using a Chasen or small whisk) until the mixture is completely smooth, slightly frothy, and dark green.

STEP 2: Prepare the Glasses

Take your chilled beer glass out of the refrigerator.

STEP 3: Pour the Matcha Base

Slowly pour the concentrated matcha base into the bottom of the chilled beer glass.

STEP 4: Pour the Beer and Combine

Slowly pour the cold beer into the glass, allowing it to glide down the inner side to preserve carbonation and control foam. Aim to minimize head.

  • Pro Tip: If the matcha settles too much at the bottom, gently stir it once with a long spoon (mudler) to create an elegant swirl and integrate the flavors without making it too foamy.

Recommended Beer Pairing

For the best Matcha Beer experience, choose a light-bodied, crisp, and clean pale lager. These globally available brands are perfect for balancing the earthy notes of matcha:

  • Heineken (Lager): One of the most recognizable beers worldwide. Its balanced profile and light malty sweetness complement the "Umami" of the matcha without overpowering it.

  • Stella Artois (Pilsner): This classic Belgian pilsner has a crisp finish and subtle floral hop notes that pair elegantly with high-quality Japanese green tea.

  • Budweiser or Bud Light: Widely available across North America and beyond. These are very clean and refreshing, serving as an excellent neutral canvas that lets the vibrant green color and matcha flavor shine.

  • Corona Extra: A very popular choice for a refreshing twist. If you use Corona, the light carbonation and smooth finish make for a very easy-to-drink matcha cocktail.

Pro Tip for International Markets

When looking for a beer to mix with matcha, look for labels that say "Premium Lager," "Pilsner," or "Blonde Ale." Avoid heavy IPAs (which are too bitter) or Stouts (which are too dark), as they will mask the delicate aroma and beautiful green color of the matcha.
